Lots of calls come into our dojo asking what the difference is between the kickboxing offered at their local gym and the kickboxing offered at our karate & kickboxing dojo.
In most cases, they are two different types of kickboxing with different goals in mind – aerobic or “cardio” kickboxing at the gym and sport or self-defense kickboxing at the dojo.  Both include kicking and punching which by nature give you a great cardio workout.  At most gyms, this is where the kickboxing routines focus.  The cardio classes at most gyms are just for that…. cardio.  A good workout without any other elements.  Where this typically differs at a martial arts studio and what makes it a “sports or self-defense version”  is that it involves learning strategies and proper form with these movements, plus a lot of footwork, body movement and blocking abilities.
At the Boca Raton Karate & Kickboxing Academy, our Kickboxing gives you the best of both.  If your focus is exercise, you will definitely achieve your goal.  Plus you will learn proper form and how to move your body if you ever are faced with an opponent.  The self-defense aspect of karate and kickboxing is equally important.  Learn how to use these kickboxing elements properly and safely.  Hopefully you will never have to use them unless you choose to compete in a tournament, but it’s good to have these tools just in case…  And if you’re going to use them, proper form keeps you from getting injured.  You will also increase your flexibility, strength and endurance.
Either way, you should always try a class or two before committing to any style or location.  Find a school that allows you to experience the class so you get a feel of the instructor, the routine and the environment, making sure it’s right for you.

Kickboxing is a great way to get in shape, improve flexibility and get great cardio, but is also has benefits for those who want to learn self-defense.  Kickboxing teaches you proper form and helps you learn the physical “basics” of how to stand, how to block and move and how to fight.  You are prepared if a dangerous situation presents itself and you will be trained to react quickly through practice and repetition.  You will learn balance, and how to use an opponent’s movement to both fight and defend effectively.

You will learn to kick and punch and how to apply it during an attack, as well as how to block when someone is kicking and punching toward you.

Kickboxing is a combination of boxing and kicking.  There is no ground fighting elements in kickboxing, unless you choose to train in a MMA (mixed martial arts) environment, where all elements of standing and groundwork are covered.

Kickboxing increases strength and endurance while building core muscles and muscles in your arms, shoulders and legs.  All good things when you must defend yourself.

If you’re studying kickboxing for self-defense, it is best to find a martial arts studio that facilitates sparring with other students and the instructor.  This is the only way to get a real feel for what you learn and how it can be executed in a real-life attack situation.  You learn to anticipate your opponent’s moves and protect yourself accordingly.

In this world where information is abundant through technology, at times it can become overwhelming. However, focusing on the right knowledge can be empowering. The Martial Arts is a true art form that has a seemingly limitless amount of knowledge to tap into. This knowledge can be empowering and as important, can lead to a greater self-awareness.

By self-awareness, we mean recognizing who you are – the good and the bad. You habits, your decisions for nutrition, your attitude and your emotional core which leads to both positive and negative actions.

It is as important to know your challenges and weaknesses as it is to identify your strengths. This is just as crucial as being able to identify your opponent in kickboxing and karate – a potential attacker or a “loose cannon” that may pose danger. At times, the biggest opponent you face is yourself.

Recognition and acceptance is the key. From there we can focus on those areas and draw on our inner core of inspiration, drive and motivation with a clear view of direction and future goals. This is the key to long term success in the Martial Arts and in life itself.

Become empowered with knowledge – the right knowledge – the knowledge of self that will lead you to greater achievements and bigger dreams.
