You may wonder… What IS the difference is between the kickboxing offered at the local gym and the kickboxing offered at our karate & kickboxing dojo?  Many people ask this question and we are always happy to explain the following….

In most cases, they are two different types of kickboxing with different goals in mind – aerobic or “cardio” kickboxing at the gym and sport or self-defense kickboxing at the dojo.  Both include kicking and punching which by nature give you a great cardio workout.  At most gyms, this is where the kickboxing routines focus.  The cardio classes at most gyms are just for that…. cardio.  A good workout without any other elements.  Where this typically differs at a martial arts studio and what makes it a “sports or self-defense version”  is that it involves learning strategies and proper form with these movements, plus a lot of footwork, body movement and blocking abilities.

At the Boca Raton Karate & Kickboxing Academy, our Kickboxing gives you the best of both.  If your focus is exercise, you will definitely achieve your goal.  Plus you will learn proper form and how to move your body if you ever are faced with an opponent.  The self-defense aspect of karate and kickboxing is equally important.  Learn how to use these kickboxing elements properly and safely.  Hopefully you will never have to use them unless you choose to compete in a tournament, but it’s good to have these tools just in case…  And if you’re going to use them, proper form keeps you from getting injured.  You will also increase your flexibility, strength and endurance.

Either way, you should always try a class or two before committing to any style or location.  Find a school that allows you to experience the class so you get a feel of the instructor, the intensity of the routine and the general mood and environment, making sure it’s right for you.

We all find the holidays to be stressful in on way or another. We may travel, we shop and shop and shop…, we worry about the perfect gift and then, when the holiday gets closer, we just worry about finding ANY gift! We get houseguests coming in for the holidays, we plan parties and dinners, we eat, and eat and EAT some more! And then, some of us are alone and that can be the worst stress of all.
During the holiday season, regardless of your stress and its sources, you need to take of yourself. Exercise is the number one stress relief remedy. Your body responds to exercise, releasing the tension you hold onto and your mind responds chemically releasing “feel good” endorphins into your body.
Make the time to be good to yourself and then you will be there 100% for the others who depend on you. Be part of a group – there’s nothing more motivating then friends who are right next to you and encouraging you. Give yourself a gift of good health and safety – the martial arts provides all the elements needed to handle the holiday stress and blues. The Boca Raton Karate & Kickboxing Academy has the perfect solution.
Nobody will ever take care of you as well as you can take care of yourself!

The Fourth of 5 Phone Tips – Questions to Ask when Calling about a Kickboxing Class in Boca Raton

It’s time to start your journey in the Martial Arts!  Learn valuable self-defense and personal safety while you exercise and get a great cardio workout.  Come try 2 FREE WEEKS at the Boca Raton Karate & Kickboxing Academy.  Call today for your complimentary intro class.  561-926-1846   www.BRKKA.com

We all have limited time and resources and trying to fit in exercise can be a challenge.  If you know what you want and simply need to find the right location, then the next step is typically to pick up the phone and start calling.  We have provided a few phone tips to help expedite this process and get you the “short list” of locations to personally visit when looking for Kickboxing.

Tip #1 was about pricing.  What to ask to get the full picture of monthly costs or total contract costs.  Tip #2 was to find out the schedule of the martial arts studio or gym you are interested in.  Make sure their classes fit your schedule and they are also part of the monthly fee and not an additional cost.  Tip #3 was to ask about contract details.  A contract commitment can provide some significant savings, but you must be comfortable with the terms and know all the details.

Tip #4:  Ask what type of activities you are committing to, if any, in addition to the hour-long kickboxing classes.  This applies mainly to martial arts studios, as kickboxing classes at most gyms are just another type of cardio class.  There are rarely rank advancement of competition opportunities from a gym’s kickboxing program.

If your kickboxing goal is to learn real self-defense in addition to getting a good workout, then you most likely will end up training at a Martial Arts studio.  They will teach you proper form for punching, kicking, blocking and other valuable skills when it comes to self-defense.

Many kickboxing classes are only one part of total MMA program (mixed martial arts).  If you are training in a studio that teaches karate, for example, kickboxing is a large part of that program that ties into the self-defense elements for the practice of karate.  In a program that offers MMA, you will get a broad training of many different styles of martial arts that could include karate, judo, jiu-jitsu, and more.  These are all valuable skills.  If a real-life situation ever did occur, you never know in advance what type of attack you will face or where it will occur – standing up, on the ground, etc.  A variety of skills and training will cover a much larger ground.

If you are part of  Martial Arts studio or dojo, ask upfront what type of training commitments you will be asked to make in the future.  Some studios insist on sparring classes (team fight matches where protective gear is worn) multiple times a week after a certain rank is achieved.  This will include the purchase of protective gear that can be quite expensive in some school.  Ask about the timing and the cost.

Many schools charge for belt testing which is qualifying for a new rank after a certain amount of time has passed and skills are mastered.  Ask how often this typically occurs and the costs associated with belt testing.

Some schools insist on competition participation – outside tournaments that occur locally and inter-state.  This also is a time commitment and additional cost.

It’s good to know the entire picture before you become invested both in time and money.  The more details you know, the better you’ll decision will be.
