Kickboxing is a combination of kicking and punching from the arts/sports of karate, Muay Thai and boxing. Kickboxing classes vary from the serious martial art of Muay Thai to more exercise-oriented cardio class.

At the Boca Raton Karate & Kickboxing Academy we bring these two elements together. We teach kickboxing using proper form, so what you learn will minimize risk of injury. Kickboxing is part of our Kenpo Karate practice, teaching self-defense and benefiting from great cardio. Anyone at any age can train in kickboxing. You may wonder… What IS the difference is between the kickboxing offered at the local gym and the kickboxing offered at our karate & kickboxing dojo? Many people ask this question and we are always happy to explain the following….

In most cases, they are two different types of kickboxing with different goals in mind – aerobic or “cardio” kickboxing at the gym and sport or self-defense kickboxing at the dojo. Both include kicking and punching which by nature give you a great cardio workout. At most gyms, this is where the kickboxing routines focus. The cardio classes at most gyms are just for that…. cardio. A good workout without any other elements. Where this typically differs at a martial arts studio and what makes it a “sports or self-defense version” is that it involves learning strategies and proper form with these movements, plus a lot of footwork, body movement and blocking abilities.

At the Boca Raton Karate & Kickboxing Academy, our Kickboxing gives you the best of both. If your focus is exercise, you will definitely achieve your goal. Plus you will learn proper form and how to move your body if you ever are faced with an opponent. The self-defense aspect of karate and kickboxing is equally important. Learn how to use these kickboxing elements properly and safely. Hopefully you will never have to use them unless you choose to compete in a tournament, but it’s good to have these tools just in case… And if you’re going to use them, proper form keeps you from getting injured. You will also increase your flexibility, strength and endurance.

Either way, you should always try a class or two before committing to any style or location. Find a school that allows you to experience the class so you get a feel of the instructor, the intensity of the routine and the general mood and environment, making sure it’s right for you.

We’ve provided 4 tips over the  last few days that will help you determine where to take kickboxing classes and what to look for in a martial arts studio or gym.  We’ve covered price, number of classes included in what you pay, understanding the advantages and commitments of a contract and also the commitments of time and expense where you choose to kickbox.

Tip #5 is all about quality.  Quality includes the experience and knowledge of instructors and their background/certification as well as the quality of the facility – cleanliness, equipment, number of years in business for stability and more.

Both gyms and dojos come and go with great frequency.  Everyone has experienced or knows someone who has experienced a membership for a business that has gone under.  It’s frustrating and can become very expensive.  It has created great caution on the part of the consumer when it comes to joining a sports facility.

Ask lots of questions about the background of both owners and instructors.  Are your martial arts instructors black belts in the practices they are promoting?  Do they actually teach themselves or do they have assistant teachers?  How long has the facility been in business?  How many members train there?   Lots of dojos promote multiple styles of martial arts – make sure they actually teach the specific style that interests you.

And once you have made your short list to visit, check out the facility carefully.  Make sure it’s clean and the equipment is quality.  Check out the other students training and make sure they are of the same mindset.  Google the instructors and owners to see what others have to say about them.

Finally, ask if you can actually experience a few classes before signing up.  Lots of facilities offer a free class or trial period… but be aware…..  Sometimes these free intro classes are more about convincing you to sign a contract than to let you experience a true class.   Make sure you are actually experiencing the class you are signing up for.    Enjoy!
