Flexibility is the amount or range of movement you have around your joints, such as knees, back, shoulders, etc.  Flexibility depends on many elements – bone structure, connective tissue and muscle development.

Kickboxing is a fantastic workout that assists in improved flexibility.  Over time, your continued arm/shoulder and leg movements increase your overall flexibility, plus we always focus on stretching as part of the kickboxing routine.

Some of the most common benefits of flexibility include:

– reduced stress and released tension in the muscle groups.

– improved posture which also maximizes joint movement strength

– improved  performance in aerobic training as well as muscle conditioning

– overall reduced risk of injury

Another great reason to try adding kickboxing to your workout routine!

Kickboxing is a great way to get in shape, improve flexibility and get great cardio, but is also has benefits for those who want to learn self-defense.  Kickboxing teaches you proper form and helps you learn the physical “basics” of how to stand, how to block and move and how to fight.  You are prepared if a dangerous situation presents itself and you will be trained to react quickly through practice and repetition.  You will learn balance, and how to use an opponent’s movement to both fight and defend effectively.

You will learn to kick and punch and how to apply it during an attack, as well as how to block when someone is kicking and punching toward you.

Kickboxing is a combination of boxing and kicking.  There is no ground fighting elements in kickboxing, unless you choose to train in a MMA (mixed martial arts) environment, where all elements of standing and groundwork are covered.

Kickboxing increases strength and endurance while building core muscles and muscles in your arms, shoulders and legs.  All good things when you must defend yourself.

If you’re studying kickboxing for self-defense, it is best to find a martial arts studio that facilitates sparring with other students and the instructor.  This is the only way to get a real feel for what you learn and how it can be executed in a real-life attack situation.  You learn to anticipate your opponent’s moves and protect yourself accordingly.

The Fifth of 5 Phone Tips – Questions to Ask when Calling about a Kickboxing Class in Boca Raton

We’ve provided 4 tips over the  last few days that will help you determine where to take kickboxing classes and what to look for in a martial arts studio or gym.  We’ve covered price, number of classes included in what you pay, understanding the advantages and commitments of a contract and also the commitments of time and expense where you choose to kickbox.

Tip #5 is all about quality.  Quality includes the experience and knowledge of instructors and their background/certification as well as the quality of the facility – cleanliness, equipment, number of years in business for stability and more.

Both gyms and dojos come and go with great frequency.  Everyone has experienced or knows someone who has experienced a membership for a business that has gone under.  It’s frustrating and can become very expensive.  It has created great caution on the part of the consumer when it comes to joining a sports facility.

Ask lots of questions about the background of both owners and instructors.  Are your martial arts instructors black belts in the practices they are promoting?  Do they actually teach themselves or do they have assistant teachers?  How long has the facility been in business?  How many members train there?   Lots of dojos promote multiple styles of martial arts – make sure they actually teach the specific style that interests you.

And once you have made your short list to visit, check out the facility carefully.  Make sure it’s clean and the equipment is quality.  Check out the other students training and make sure they are of the same mindset.  Google the instructors and owners to see what others have to say about them.

Finally, ask if you can actually experience a few classes before signing up.  Lots of facilities offer a free class or trial period… but be aware…..  Sometimes these free intro classes are more about convincing you to sign a contract than to let you experience a true class.   Make sure you are actually experiencing the class you are signing up for.    Enjoy!

The Fourth of 5 Phone Tips – Questions to Ask when Calling about a Kickboxing Class in Boca Raton

We all have limited time and resources and trying to fit in exercise can be a challenge.  If you know what you want and simply need to find the right location, then the next step is typically to pick up the phone and start calling.  We have provided a few phone tips to help expedite this process and get you the “short list” of locations to personally visit when looking for Kickboxing.

Tip #1 was about pricing.  What to ask to get the full picture of monthly costs or total contract costs.  Tip #2 was to find out the schedule of the martial arts studio or gym you are interested in.  Make sure their classes fit your schedule and they are also part of the monthly fee and not an additional cost.  Tip #3 was to ask about contract details.  A contract commitment can provide some significant savings, but you must be comfortable with the terms and know all the details.

Tip #4:  Ask what type of activities you are committing to, if any, in addition to the hour-long kickboxing classes.  This applies mainly to martial arts studios, as kickboxing classes at most gyms are just another type of cardio class.  There are rarely rank advancement of competition opportunities from a gym’s kickboxing program.

If your kickboxing goal is to learn real self-defense in addition to getting a good workout, then you most likely will end up training at a Martial Arts studio.  They will teach you proper form for punching, kicking, blocking and other valuable skills when it comes to self-defense.

Many kickboxing classes are only one part of total MMA program (mixed martial arts).  If you are training in a studio that teaches karate, for example, kickboxing is a large part of that program that ties into the self-defense elements for the practice of karate.  In a program that offers MMA, you will get a broad training of many different styles of martial arts that could include karate, judo, jiu-jitsu, and more.  These are all valuable skills.  If a real-life situation ever did occur, you never know in advance what type of attack you will face or where it will occur – standing up, on the ground, etc.  A variety of skills and training will cover a much larger ground.

If you are part of  Martial Arts studio or dojo, ask upfront what type of training commitments you will be asked to make in the future.  Some studios insist on sparring classes (team fight matches where protective gear is worn) multiple times a week after a certain rank is achieved.  This will include the purchase of protective gear that can be quite expensive in some school.  Ask about the timing and the cost.

Many schools charge for belt testing which is qualifying for a new rank after a certain amount of time has passed and skills are mastered.  Ask how often this typically occurs and the costs associated with belt testing.

Some schools insist on competition participation – outside tournaments that occur locally and inter-state.  This also is a time commitment and additional cost.

It’s good to know the entire picture before you become invested both in time and money.  The more details you know, the better you’ll decision will be.
