When you’re focused on exercising, kickboxing, weightlifting, running or other cardio routines, stretching is often considered something to do when there is some extra time prior to or after your workout. It’s secondary to why you’re there…. to exercise… right?

If nothing else, stretching helps improve flexibility – a great benefit for kickboxers! Increased flexibility helps reduce injuries and improve your overall athletic workout by assisting your joints as they move through a full range of motion. Stretching also helps your muscles with increased blood flow.

It can be done anytime, anywhere as long as it’s done correctly. But take note…if good form isn’t followed, stretching can be painful and problematic. A good warm up is always recommended before stretching. Stretching isn’t a warm up. A good stretch is recommended after a workout – when muscles are warm and less likely to tear.

Remember to stretch on both sides – whatever muscle groups you are focusing on. Gently move into each stretch position and don’t bounce or move too quickly to avoid muscle tear. Tears produce scar tissues as they heal, which in turn tightens muscles further, creating inflexibility and painful muscles – just the opposite of why we stretch to begin with! Muscles should stretch to the point of tension – not pain. If you feel pain, then you are overdoing it and should back off and hold the stretch in a less painful position.

And for maximum benefit, stretching should be a regular routine – 2 to 3 times every week. Any stretch can be modified if you have injuries or conditions that need to be considered.
